The reputable Louis Vuitton brand is the maker of the iconic Louis Vuitton Speedy, Louis Vuitton Neverfull, Louis Vuitton Noé, and Louis Vuitton Alma bags. However, one bag is missing from this list. A fantastic Louis Vuitton bag called Saumur. An incredibly handy crossbody bag, the Louis Vuitton Saumur is available in several sizes, holds many items, and can be adjusted easily. Hence, it is perfect for use as an everyday bag, a traveling bag, it and adds a fabulous touch to your overall look.
Originally made sometime in the 1980s, the Louis Vuitton Saumur bag gets its name from the Saumur village in the Noire valley which is located in the Northern part of France. The village is known for its horse riding schools, and this may also be the inspiration for the bag’s design. When the two compartments of this bag are unbuckled, the structure of a horse saddle may come to mind.
The Design Of The Bag
The classic Saumur is produced using monogram canvas and Vachetta leather trims, with brown cotton canvas lining. The shoulder strap features a shoulder pad which makes the bag very comfortable to carry even when it is fully packed. The Louis Vuitton Saumur is made up of two individual compartments which are buckled together. Both compartments have separate buckled closures to open and close them.
The LV Saumur is originally a crossbody bag, however, it can definitely be carried as a shoulder bag too. While there are seven ways to adjust the shoulder strap, it can also be shortened even more to make it look like a real shoulder bag. You can achieve this by simply following the steps below:
- Open up the shoulder strap buckle to give you two parts.
- Grab the strap on the longer side and run it between/underneath the two compartments.
- Let it out through the other side of the bag.
- Close the buckle.
The classic Louis Vuitton monogram print is the design most commonly used for the Saumur in any size. However, other styles are also available such as the Damier Azul, Damier Ebene, and Lin (called Idylle since 2010), a smaller version of the monogram print that feels more cotton-like. The classic Saumur bag has also been available in special editions, such as the Saumur Flore perforated which was displayed in the 2012 Louis Vuitton Cruise ad campaign.
The Various Sizes Of The Bag
The Saumur bag is available in three different models/sizes. They are Louis Vuitton Saumur 43, Louis Vuitton Saumur 35, and Louis Vuitton Saumur 30. They are named according to the bag’s width measured in centimeters. Instead of only feeling like a bigger or smaller version of the same bag, these three bag models feel like entirely different bags because of the size difference between them. All the models are suitable for various purposes. Unfortunately, Louis Vuitton stopped making the Saumur sometime in 2010.
It surprised everyone when the Saumur was reintroduced by Louis Vuitton in 2017. However, the bags came with some changes and redesigns. Not all sizes came back after the discontinuation. The reintroduction featured only the Saumur 35 and Saumur 30, which were renamed as Saumur GM (formerly 35) and Saumur MM (formerly 30).

A little design was also involved in the reintroduction. The new Saumur comes with cowhide leather trimmings and golden color metallic pieces. The monogram canvas looks a bit different, with a sharper look. Also, the leather beneath the shoulder strap has a more beige look. The coloration process of the famous Louis Vuitton leather known as patina will turn this light beige into our favorite darker brown hue. It also features an additional leather tag in the middle with the inscription: Louis Vuitton Paris.
These days, only the Saumur MM is displayed on the Louis Vuitton website.
However, the pre-loved market still provides you with different designs and sizes of this bag. If you want to get your own Louis Vuitton Saumur, it is our pleasure to inform you that you can find various sizes on our website.
